Round 9 Airport West at Home

Pascoe Vale 15-19 109 d Airport West 4-6 30

With Airport West registering its first win of the year and a very solid win by 82 points against Avondale heights , we knew we needed to bring our A game to the table, especially early on. We knew that with time and space, Airport West can move the ball quickly and score so an emphasis was put on pressuring the player with the ball and giving them no time and space when kicking the ball.

With this focus the boys set about taking the opportunities presented through turnovers and solid clearance work to establish a commanding quarter time lead. Only a poor conversion rate cost us a greater lead. The team only allowed 5 inside 50’s in the first quarter and kept the opposition scoreless. The second quarter was fairly even with boys struggling to utilise their time with the ball.

At half time , we led by 6 goals and look to surge on which we did with 4 goals in the third and 4 goals 8 points in the last. The pleasing point was to keep the opposition to 30 points. We had many good players with Cauchi kicking 5 goals (could have been more……), strong midfield presences in Ogden and Johncock and a back six which operated well. The small backs of Hemala, Stillman and Blakemore were damaging on the rebound and Fozzy and Gregory catching it in the air.

A special day for two young men who made their debuts for the club. Will Hoare came in late to cover for Boyd being a late out. Will battled hard all day in the ruck and showed some promising signs. Hopefully this can be a great taster for him to continue to develop. Also Ben Murdoch played his first game, he did have a fair following of supporters wishing him well as Ben is a great character and passionate PV man. Ben did some good things playing alongside our back six and we look forward to him continuing to develop.

Off to the bye 5wins-3 loses-1 draw so reasonably happy at the halfway point. We will regroup and prepare to take on the might of Greenvale in two weeks.
